Character Background: Kougyoku is the eighth princess of the Kou Empire (aka Ancient Fantasy China). She has a large family with three brothers, six unnamed sisters, and two cousins. She is the baby of the family, so she doesn't hold much political power. It doesn't help that her mother wasn't someone with noble standing, but a courtesan that the emperor decided to have fun with. This resulted in Kougyoku having a pretty lonely childhood. She had trouble making friends as the servants wouldn't speak with her because she was one of the royal family and most of nobles wouldn't because of her lowborn status. Since she had NO FRIENDS and the social skills of a rock, she grew accustomed to doing things by herself, such as playing pretend, playing sports, doing fashion shows, having tea parties, etc. Around the age of 8 or 9 she met Koubun Ka, her babysitter assistant. He was appalled to find that the Royal Princess he was supposed to serve for the rest of his life was some scraggly little girl with horrible hair that hid beneath tables. God bless his soul.

To put it simply, if you were to look up the trope "Sheltered Royalty With No Friends And Bad Social Skills" you would find a picture of Kougyoku Ren. It is very tragic. Wipe your tears, we are moving on.

As a teenager, Kougyoku was interested in swordplay. She started training and became adept at it. Judar, who is the Kou Empire's Magi, was the first person to tell her that she was strong. This lead to her eldest brother, Kouen, acknowledging her as a warrior which made her ecstatic. If she couldn't be a proper princess, she could at least fight! Eventually, Judar raised the dungeon Vinea for Kougyoku to conquer. She went in with Koubun and Unimportant Background Characters and completely dominated the place. With that she became a metal vessel user and one of Judar's king candidates. Gosh, she is good at fighting things.

Time skip to where the Magi story is actually happening. Remember the Kou Empire Kougyoku is from? Yeah, well. They like being in control of things. And as for Kougyoku's first appearance in the story, they are trying to get the country of Balbadd under their hands. How? The answer is a lot of awful tricks and marriage. Kougyoku getting married to the king of Balbadd, to be exact. When she first shows up, it's in the middle of the heroes fighting Judar. By fighting, I mean beating him up. Kougyoku can't have people messing with her little Magi buddy so she goes to save him and begins fighting Aladdin and Co. instead. At first she seems to be cold and a straight up antagonist, easily "killing" Aladdin's Djinn without hesitation.

But then everything changed when the Sindria Nation attacked. King Sinbad interrupts her magic before she is able to do anything else. He tells her that royalty like them shouldn't be fighting and that they should talk peacefully somewhere else. She gets embarrassed, but agrees and leaves with her posse (not before making sure that Sinbad knew she wasn't leaving because HE told her to!!!!). Weird, wasn't she just insulting all of them and getting ready to demolish anyone in her way? Curiouser and curiouser!

The next time we see Kougyoku, she's in the guest room of the Balbadd palace with Koubun. She sulks about the marriage and it's revealed that she actually wants nothing to do with marrying some random king she has never met. Kougyoku laments the fact that she was the one chosen as the wife instead of her cousin. She wanted to fall in love with Sinbad! Go on romantic adventures with Sinbad! Ride off into the sunset with Sinbad! Become a warrior and make out with the love of her life Sinbad on top of the corpses of her fallen enemies! All the other things a childish person with no friends dreams about! Despite this, she goes through with the plan because it is her duty as one of the princesses of Kou and gosh darn it if she has a job she is going to do it well.

When she actually meets the king, it's in the middle of an arguement between the princes. Plot things had happened and they're in a political dispute over who should rule Balbadd. Kougyoku puts on her princess poker face and acts as if she doesn't care. They need to choose who is going to be king. She is here to get married and sign a treaty and it is going to happen. Or not. More plot things happen and Balbadd ends up being a new king-less republic. While she keeps her calm demeanor, Kougyoku is secretly overjoyed that she doesn't have to be forced to marry anyone (especially that horrible King Ahbmad. ugh). Kougyoku still has to report back home and tell her brother about the situation. She tells Sinbad that he has to visit the Kou Empire to talk to her brother (there is no ulterior motive here, what are you talking about) and prove that he and his alliance of countries are helping Balbadd. She leaves after this and fantasizes about Sinbad coming to her country and being beautiful. Dreamy Sigh. I think now is probably a good time to reveal that Kougyoku has a schoolgirl crush on the charming King Sinbad. Are you surprised? You should be.

A couple months later we are treated to the beautiful island country of Sindria. Ah, what a great place. So great that Prince Hakuryuu is coming by boat to learn under King Sinbad. But, who cares. This isn't an app for Hakuryuu. This is about Kougyoku! Who is also on the boat with her cousin and looking awfully indignant with a sword in her hand. Uh-oh.

Sinbad and the crew welcome Hakuryuu and the other Kou Empire visitors and Sinbad mentions how it was a shame he didn't get to see Kougyoku when he went to visit Kou. This was obviously the wrong answer because Kougy automatically attacks him with her sword. According to her, he is a dirty dirty liar because they did see each other! She woke up in the same bed as him the morning after his visit!!

What a scandal, right?

Cue everyone being ashamed of Sinbad. Sinbad is confused. Kougyoku says she will kill him and then herself. Hakuryuu is just plain embarrassed. Magic shit happens and they find out Sinbad didn't do anything and that someone had knocked out Kougyoku and placed her in his room. Kougyoku apologizes for jumping the gun and causing problems, but it's revealed that the person behind everything was her assistant, Koubun. She forgives him. It is all very ridiculous. We are going to move on again.

Later on, she shows up with Hakuryuu to speak with the main trio. She asks Aladdin to let bygones be bygones and tells him they should start anew! They shake hands. It doesn't go very well and they hurt each other instead. Aladdin is still angry with her for killing his Djinn, and she is still upset with him for hurting Judar. He insults her because he is a horrible little demon child. Sadly, they do not become friends.

Then Judar comes to Sindria and starts causing problems because that is all he is good for. Kougyoku overhears him telling Sinbad that the Kou Empire will destroy Sindira. Confused, Kougyoku asks him what he means. Judar doesn't answer and instead tells her that she doesn't need to stay here anymore and to come back home with him so he can make her an army general. Kougyoku, not sure what to do, stays quiet. He leaves and she asks to speak with Sinbad.

Turns out, Kougyoku really doesn't want Sindria and Kou to go to war. Surprise surprise! I wonder why. She apologizes for Judar's trash talking and Sinbad tells her that it's alright. Judar saying there is going to be a war isn't the same as the Emperor saying it. He reassures her and tells her she can stay in Sindria for however long she likes. Kougyoku becomes flustured and thanks him for being understanding.

There is a party going on later, because that is obviously what you do when a possible war is on the horizon, and poor Kougyoku gets smashed. Koubun freaks out and Kougyoku talks about how she thinks she will stay in Sindria forever. King Sinbad said she could stay after all! Her family wouldn't miss her, especially after all the mistakes she just made. And she is eighth in line for the throne, so it's not like she's actually important like her older brothers or cousin. Boohoo.

A few days after the party, she is in one of the palace yards. Alibaba comes by and steps on her poor flowers. To apologize, Alibaba makes her a crown of flowers instead. Completely impressed, she asks him to teach her how to make them. Some time passes and Alibaba is training. He almost hits her with his sword and she scolds him. The fact that he almost took her head off is forgotten when she shows him a perfectly made crown of flowers. Alibaba is surprised because when he first taught her, she was horrible. She tells him to shut up (geez Alibaba we can't all be perfect) and asks if he would like to spar. After all, he was in the middle of training and she is soooo rusty.

He reluctantly agrees and she goes straight into a full djinn equip. Alibaba is surprised because it's the first time he has seen one. Lucky for him, Sinbad is in the area and tells Kougyoku that she should fight him instead. It takes a while because Kougyoku becomes flustered again. She doesn't want Sinbad of all people to see her in her full Djinn equip because it's...pretty revealing, and Kougyoku is a modest and ~pure hearted princess~. He manages to convince her by complimenting her on her power. She becomes extremely giddy and agrees to fight him without holding back. Throughout the battle she is able to keep up with Sinbad, which says something about her strength. Sinbad even calls her terrifying. He ends the fight by using magic to put her to sleep.

She is moved to a bedroom and Alibaba comes to visit her. He gushes about Sinbad's magic and she shyly asks what he thought about hers. He answers by saying she was very cool. She tells him about how happy this all made her and how wonderful it has been staying in Sindria. She continues on to say she has decided to go back home and try to talk her brother and Judar out of going to war with Sindria. Alibaba asks what she would do if they don't listen. Kougyoku becomes sullen and tells him she would never be able to fight against Sindria, the country where she was finally able to be herself, and Sinbad, who she loves. He was her first love and even though she knows that he would never feel the same way about her, she was still silly and followed him all the way to Sindria. She begins to cry and Alibaba comforts her. She thanks him and asks if he could stay and listen to her talk. She talks to him about her life and how she thought all she was good for was being a warrior fighting for the sake of the Kou Empire. Meeting everyone had changed that, and she promises that no matter what happens she will never fight against Sindria.

Alibaba is once again surprised by the princess because he comes from a similar situation. He mentions that they are the same and Kougyoku looks away and says they should be friends because of this. Alibaba agrees and says that it was nice meeting her. In true Kougyoku fashion, she hits him and tells him friends aren't so formal. He agrees and calls her by her name for once. And that's how Kougyoku made her first friend.

The next day, she and her entourage are leaving Sindria. Alibaba sees her off (because they are friends now!! wow. friendship) and this is the point I am taking her from.

So, at the beginning Kougyoku seems to be pretty serious. Regardless of not being the top politician in her family, she does well in keeping a straight face and being an excellent representative of her country. This is not the whole story, as we find out once the second story arc begins. She is easily irritated and has a little bit of a violent temper, which doesn't go well with the fact that she seems to enjoy fighting a little too much. She's childish, dramatic, insecure, sensitive, and generally just terrible when it comes to dealing with other people. She is also incredibly gullible as shown by the side stories. Once Judar duped her into believing a fake common sense lesson because he was bitter that he fell for the same thing. Another time he tricked her into taking a bath with pigs. What a great not-friend, right? Kougy has her good points though. She is easily excitable and loves learning new things. Even though she can be a bit naive at times, she is wise to the point that Ja'far even notices. But most importantly, she is fiercely loyal and protective of those she holds dear.

Abilities/Special Powers:

Djinn; Kougyoku is a dungeon captor and is in possession of a metal vessel, an object that holds a Djinn. The metal vessel in Kougyoku's case is her hairpin. She's the master of the water Djinn, Vinea. With this she is capable of controlling water and making it do whatever she likes.

Djinn Weapon Equip; Dungeon captors can transform their metal vessels into the specialized weapon of the Djinn. For Kougyoku, her hairpin turns into Vinea's Sword. This only lasts for however long her magoi (life/magic energy) does.

Full Djinn Equip; The next step for a dungeon captor is a full equip, where their whole body takes on a similar appearance to their Djinn instead of just a weapon. Kougyoku is pretty good at this and takes on a sort of mermaid/fishy appearance. During a full equip, the person gets an extreme magic, AKA a very powerful move. Think special attack in a fighting game. Kougyoku's extreme magic is called Vainel Ganezza and to put it simply, she summons a large tsunami.

Swordplay; She is trained in swordplay and is quite good at it (even though Koubun goes easy on her). She especially enjoys fencing.

Third-Person Sample:

Had she fallen asleep again? All she remembered was leaving Sindria, staying on deck until the island was no more than a small dot on the horizon and escaping to her quarters before anyone could see the somber look on her face. She had embarrassed herself enough during her stay, no need to add salt to the injury. There were probably already rumors that she was a Sindria sympathizer. Oh, what if Kouen heard about what happ--- no no no she didn't want to think about that. There were more pressing matters.

This...place. Her first thought was that the boat had docked while she was asleep. Koubun must have been kind enough to carry her to whatever sort of inn this was instead of waking her. The only problem with this was that he was nowhere to be seen. The other servants had mysteriously vanished as well. It was odd, which led to Kougyoku's second thought.

Kidnapping.

No.

No one would be enough of a dullard to steal away with a princess of Kou when she was expected to come home! Right? Of course not, she tells herself as she habitually checks to see if her hairpin was in place. She sighs in relief when she feels it there. Either this kidnapper was an idiot, or she was jumping to conclusions again. Still, to suddenly awaken in a mysterious building she couldn't recognize (n-not that she traveled enough in the first place to even be able to tell the difference between foreign architecture) was a strange occurrence.

Stranger still was the box she found on her person. She turns it over a few times. Nothing. A couple of taps. Nothing. Shakes it. Still nothing. She grimaces and decides this is all a big waste of time. She has an assistant to find, you know.

First-Person Sample:

[ The network feed opens and Wonderland is treated to a whole lot of shaking video (apologies to those with motion sickness). When it finally stops, it stays on a crooked shot of a hallway and a girl. A girl who is looking particularly fed up and isn't even paying attention to the screen. Probably because to her it's nothing more than a bizarre and useless box. ]

Koubun! Are you here? Hello? [ The video starts to move back and forth as she walks-- no, stomps her way down the hall. Her assistant has a lot of explaining to do. Honestly, going to sleep and waking up without knowing how she got from point A to point B was something that was happening a little too often for the poor princess. ]
